A: I just test drove an SE the other day. I definitely fell in love. The ride was so smooth and actually fun. I know they only get 170 horse power, but it was extremely peppy. A: Reletively easy and inexpensive, and both not only increase power, but efficiency… go for intake and exhaust. You can youtube your car, or similar engine size and features with different exhaust systems then go to a muffler shop and say I want this…. if you want a simple upgrade, to get more power to the wheels go for a lightweight crank pulley. You can get a full pulley set, but imo you really only need the crank pulley. This one is nice because it reflects every hp gain you add without changing anything again.

A: Yep what you need is a ‘High to Low Level Converter’.

Basically, it takes two of your speaker outputs, and converts them into RCA inputs for your amp. You can still use the speakers, you just splice into the wires.

Some amps also have a built in high-to-low level converter but I have usually only seen this in the ‘cheaper’ amps.

A: It is a simple interest loan so any money you pay more then the payment goes to equity. There is absolutely no reason to re finance as if you pay off a year by doubling some payments then it will be paid off early. A: That is nothing to worry about. It is very normal to notice that in your car. It often varies, based on the incline of the road. Even a slight incline may cause the rpms to vary when going at a constant speed. It will be more obvious on higher inclines while going at a steady speed. Also, I notice that the AC, when at a stop tends to affect the rpms by 300 +/- RPMS. When the car is standing still after a while, I notice that the RPMS may drop because the AC power drops at an idle. While moving at a constant speed, the AC takes additional power from the engine, thus increasing the RPMs more than normally.

A: All of Toyota’s colors are boring. They seem to have even forgotten how to make a beautiful silver–which now looks like dull lifeless grey. the blues are horrible and look like they mixed other colors in it. The Japanese seem to have a warped sense of both color and design. For a boring line-less exterior yu won’t find in any other car–sloped sides and humped roof lines. Just terrible. All of them. they run good tho, unless yu happen to get one with a sludge problem where the engines blow, or a Camry with one of the many bad shifting transmissions. I have a Toyota, but am considering going to something else. The quality has definitely slipped with all the cheesy plastic and rubber interiors too. Toyota seems to be shooting itself in the foot.

Q: I have a question about my 2010 Toyota Corolla?
I got the basic model a few days ago, and at first when I turned my key all the door locks opened. But now when I do it only my drivers seat lock opens. Since the basic model doesn’t come with a remote key entry does that mean my key can only open the drivers side of the door and I have to open all the other doors by hand?
I did try it this morning, it’s still not opening. I guess I’ll try again

A: How that usually works is this:

When the doors are all locked if you turn the key to the unlock position once and let go, it only unlocks the drivers door. If you do it twice quickly it will open the rest, it may also do this if you hold it.

This is by design, by the way, so if you were getting into the car and there was a shady looking character on the other side you would not automatically unlock all the doors.

The reason I’m taking this tack is because a few owners with repaired toyotas complain of repeated malfunction. I’m guessing something in their environment is causing the problems, and that “something” didn’t go away.

The power only comes from a small 4 cylinder engine and that’s why it gets good mpg. Even though it is a small engine it is extremely reliable. This car is very reliable where you will almost never have any trouble with it unless you are driving very erratically, which most toyota owners don’t. The steering is good but not impressive. Its just your average power steering system and finally the comfort. The comfort is good because you never feel as if the car is too big or too small. its the perfect size. A: Molly, that would be a very stupid move. Vehicles drop the most in value just after they’ve been purchased. Your vehicle (2009 NIssan Altima Coupe) is probably worth a lot less now than before you bought it. If you just give it back, you won’t get the value out of it and you’ll have to pay for that drop in value.

You will ALWAYS come out on the short end when trading a car, especially a fairly new one where most of the depreciation occurs during the first 2 or 3 years of the car’s life.

Elantras hold up fairly well; Hyundai has improved quality control massively over the past few years. However they don’t hold their value all that well, certainly not as well as the Scions do.

Q: Issues with 2010 Hyundai Elantra alarm system.?
I just purchased a 2010 Hyundai Elantra a week ago and not a day has gone by where I haven’t grabbed my keys and gone running to my car because the alarm would randomly go off. I’ve tried everything from to open and shutting all the doors along with the hood and trunk, to checking the sensor and attempting to disable the battery. Yet to no avail was I able to get it to stop randomly going off and I’ve had to resort to just locking the doors by key to avoid arming the alarm. I’m curious if anybody else has had this issue and what you did to fix the problem. I tried calling the dealer hoping he would have some insight since after all he is a Hyundai dealer. All he told me was to bring it in and since it’s a good 40 miles away and I work 10 hour shifts 7 days a week this isn’t exactly feasible and am hoping somebody else would know what could be going on?

A: These Elantras have a pretty common problem with the hood switch. If your hood switch is not adjusted correctly, it will randomly make the vehicle think the hood is being opened when the alarm is armed, causing the alarm to go off.

I know this is frustrating, and I’m sorry to hear how far you are from your dealer. Call your dealer and ask them if they provide transportation or pick-up service. Many dealers will offer to have a Driver bring you a loner vehicle, usually a newer model Hyundai, and drive your vehicle to the shop for warranty complaints to avoid you having to make a long trip for a problem that is covered by your warranty.

Please know that this is one of very few common problems with the Elantra, they are probably Hyundai’s most reliable vehicle and you made a good choice in getting one. Ask them to check for any open campaigns while it is in the shop.

A: There is nothing wrong. It’s still too new. The A/C does run when you use defrost mode, which does impact gas mileage. The highway mileage indicates the car is running properly.

Just give it more time. I don’t know where you live, but cold weather makes a car consume far more fuel. Once you put more miles on, the city gas mileage will go way up.

Honestly, don’t worry. Absolutly do not put any alcohol, or fuel treatments in your vehicle. I will solve nothing and possibly cause damage.

I have a 2003 Ford Mustang Convertible Pony Edition with only 55,000 kms on it, and I went to the Canadian Blue Book web site to find out how much it was worth and got a price that was about $2,000 lower than what the dealer offered me if I traded it in. This Mustang is my first car, and it’s never been in an accident and it’s got a clean record. With that in mind, how do you get over the sentimental attachment to an object you value? I’m going to find it extremely difficult to let go of the Mustang, but if it’s going to save me a bundle on a trade in, then I shouldn’t think twice about letting it go. I’ve had the Mustang for almost 7 years now and although it’s nice, it’s not very practical and insurance is a killer ($3,100 the first year, $2,900 the following year, coming down with each accident-free year). What’s insurance like on the Escape? I hope it would be considerably less because it’s a) not my first car and b) not a sports car and c) I’m not a first-time car buyer now. It’s been paid for for years, and I take excellent care of it, and would do the same with the Escape if I buy one.

I think I need some advice… any of you Escape owners out there have anything good to say about it?

There is a 200lb difference in weight (the Limited being heavier) but is that the reason why there is such a big difference in MPG ratings? These ratings are from the Ford site, other sites report different ratings (some reporting equal MPG for both models). Just curious as to what is causing this MPG difference between the two.

A: The ‘09 Escape starts at $20,435 w/o taxes, destination, etc. Most of the changes from ‘09 to ‘10 are either inexpensive addons or options. MyKey’ll be standard on XLT and Limited trim, yet not base trim. I’d expect they’d pass off maybe a couple hundred, if that much, to tack on the base price. The spotter mirror is a very cheap, yet functional item that shouldn’t affect price at all. Active Park Assist is also an option.

So with all that info in mind, I’d assume it shouldn’t come out to more than $21k (for base trim, of course). Not sure how upper trims might be affected yet though.

I really enjoy the “light ice blue” color on the Ford Escape. This color, however, only comes on Hybrids. I was only interested in getting the XLT model, which is 10K less than the Hybrid.

A: The cheapest rout would be to get one as close to the color as possible. To paint a car a different color requires taking the entire car apart to paint all the surfaces. If you get one that is close, then you can have just the exterior painted. All of the trim still has to come off, but it is still cheaper than painting everything. As long as you can stand the color difference of the inside of the doors to the outside.

Any color you paint the car is going to be expensive for a quality job done with quality materials. Your looking at around 5000 to 7000$.

My wife and I are thinking we’ll want a new(er) car in the next couple of years to replace her aging Nissan Sentra. Our search right now is pretty casual, but will probably intensify when we have a baby.

She’s limiting her shopping to cars that are:

1. Easy to get in and out of

2. Easy to haul stuff (and baby car seats) in

3. Easy to park (e.g. easy to tell where all the “corners” are, where the hood and tail end, etc.)

That’s why our comparison list is mostly small car-based SUVs:
* 2010 Chevy Equinox

* 2010 Nissan Cube

All of the above get close to 30 mpg (if not slightly more) on the highway and can be had for reasonable prices (sub-$20,000) new, which are also important benchmarks for us. With that said, we probably won’t buy new– that’s why we’re looking at 2010 models now, even though we might not buy until 2011 or 2012.

What would you pick if you were a young couple starting a family? I’m leaning toward the Cube because the mechanical details will be familiar to me (I do all the servicing on our Sentra now) and because it’s amazingly efficient in terms of interior space. But there are things I like about all of the others on our list, too. That’s why I want your opinions. What do you like best from that list, and why?

Also, if you have other recommendations for a small family hauler, easy to park, that gets close to 30 mpg highway, please share them!
We’ve considered the Toyota and Honda entries, not impressed for the prices they’re asking. Also tried to get wife interested in Mazda products– I’m a big fan of the Mazda 5– but to no avail.

The thing about possibly owning a Cube is, long after the “fashion statement” element has gone, it’s still got a LOT of useful space inside.

Also, to your point about hatchbacks/cars being better suited to people-hauling, I agree to some extent. But after years of feeling like we’re “falling into” and “climbing out of” our Sentra, we want something with a little higher seating position. Most of these you just sort of slide onto the seat, which is near hip-level– especially the Cube and Soul.

And BTW, I’m a big VW fan (especially TDIs!), but not a fan of the electrical problems they seem to have.

ThumbsUpFanatic: I realize you’re not going to get 30 mpg out of the V6 Equinox. That’s why we’re looking at the four-cylinder. Besides, I think EPA sticker shows 17/24 for the mileage on the V6, so why would I expect 30 mpg out of that engine?

The Ford Escape is similar. The four-cylinder gets 28 hwy, but the six will get low- to mid-20s, at best.

A: I would always go with the highest quality, in part to avoid the expense and inconvenience of serious problems.

I have a 2010 ford escape with a video screen on the rear view mirror for the reverse camera. The stereo already has audio input jacks. I was wondering if I can splice in a video source into the lcd. I’d also have to find how to have power running to it since it only powers on when the car is put in reverse. Would this work and be easy to do without to many mods?

A: Its not an easy modification,and if you mess with it and something goes wrong Ford will void your new car warranty.Also the screen in the mirror is only 2″ which is very small,It would be more sensible to install a screen in the visor,but its your car do what you want.

On my 2010 Chevy Silverado, I can shut the traction control off by the switch but it will automatically re-engage itself if my tires are spinning. Is there anyway to bypass the traction control?

A: Each wheel has a wheel speed sensor built into the hub. The car determines when to engage the traction control based on the input of those sensors. You cannot just cut the wires to the sensors or you will have big problems. What you would do is create a very large wire harness that basically takes the signal from one wheel sensor and sends it to the on-board computer as the rest of the wheel sensors. This will give the computer the illusion of each wheel spinning at the same rate and thus no need for TCS to engage. This has been a somewhat common thing for late 90s Cadillac STS owners to do to drag race since when TCS is disabled it also disables 1st gear.

I’m on Chevy’s website building a Silverado 1500 Crew Cab, and I’m confused about what these gear ratios mean to a layman such as myself. I have selected the 5.3L V8 w/6-speed automatic transmission, and I can choose between the 3.08 or 3.42 gear ratios.

I drive on pavement 95% of the time, and I only take the boat out twice a month tops (about a five mile trip from the house). I am looking for acceleration more than top speed. What can I expect as far as acceleration, top speed, gas mileage, etc. from each of these two gear ratios?

A: The 3.08 gear ratio means the drive shaft will rotate 3.08 revolutions to 1 rotation of the rear tire. Thus, the 3.08 will have lower rpms at highway speeds, but not as much torque for towing. The 3.42 will tow easier, but get lower mileage as your engine will have higher rpms at the same speed.
If a boat is all your towing, and at only 5 miles, I would get the 3.08.
If acceleration is important, the 3.42.

A: Key blanks are available on Ebay for about $20 including programming instructions. You can have the key cut almost anyplace that cuts keys. The seller in the link has sold almost 20,000 with a 100% satisfaction rating. You can get one from any GM dealer for about $200. All you would need at the dealer is the cars VIN and proof that it’s your car.

My son accidentally put a quarter in the factor cd player or a rental 2010 Chevy Impala. Is there anyway for me to try to retrieve it on my own without taking it to a repair shop. Please keep in mind this is a rental car. I’m freaking out!!!

A: well since my dad always uses rental cars for his work i would recommend just leaving it in their since nobody even uses the CD player in a rental anyways. They do not check for minor details that small. Take a breath and don’t worry about it.

A: Yes they are thinking of bringing them back. They will be much better than the old B-body cars. The Camaro and G8 are the only ones coming back for sure. The rest depend on the new CAFE laws. If they get real strict then we wont see the rest.

The will all be built on the new Zeta RWD platform. The 1st year will be built in Australia because there is no plants in North America that are setup to build this platform yet. The plant the builds the W-body cars (Grand Prix, Impala, Monte Carlo) in Canada will be closed down, retooled, and upgraded. Then the production of the North American cars (maybe not the Camaro) will be moved there and only the Australian cars will be made in Australia. The Australian plant does not have the capacity to build all these cars once they are in full production.

Q: When will there be a price drop in 2009 impalas?
I am looking to get a new vehicle, preferably a Chevy Impala. I am just wondering if the 2009 impalas will drop significantly because the 2010’s are out. I have gone to a few Chevy dealer lots, and the 2009’s and 2010’s are right around the same price. Is this normal, or should I assume that in a week/month the price will drop. How soon does the price typically drop down when new models are released?

A: Dealers can’t change what’s on the window sticker so technically speaking there is never a drop in price. Dealers that add markup however can reduce or eliminate the markup. They have their profit to negotiate with and that’s it. Any discount beyond that comes from the factory in the form of rebates, or cash incentives to the dealer. Dealers cannot negotiate rebates, but the cash incentives are there’s to do with as they please. You’ll see some posters talking about kickbacks, or what is actually called “holdback” that the dealer gets from the factory. I’m not aware of any dealer that will negotiate their holdback, it is their last line of defense against losing money on a sale, and on an Impala, it’s only a few hundred bucks. Now your Impala will have about 5% profit for you to work with, so roughly 1000-1200 bucks, I’ve no idea what rebates and or incentives are currently available. If price is your number one concern, consider a rental return, dealers get em dirt cheap and they are very well maintained cars that are still under factory warranty.

I want to buy a new car…..but I have no idea what car to get.

At first i really wanted a Chevy Impala SS but then i realised the last good impalas were made back in 95-96. Then a monte carlo but I dont want front wheel drive….I decided to wait til 2010 when chevy said they will bring back the rear wheel drive for impalas.

I want a sporty looking car, fast, and under $40,000. Anyone have any suggestions?
Oh and im not going to be b uying it within the next year it will be around 2009 when im out of school and get a job with a friend doing what his brother does.

A: If you want a rear wheel drive car, and you like the 4 door sedans with lots of power like the Impala and Monte, then I would suggest checking out the Pontiac GTO. It has a supercharged 6.0 liter V8 and it has unique styling, but I will list other cars that fit your criteria that I like a lot, and hopefully it is helpful:

I am selling a 1987 Formula Firebird. 159,000 miles on the car, the guy i bought it from said there is only about 75,000 on the motor. 350/5 speed. Has the WS6 suspension package, WS6 Wing, T-tops (THAT DO NOT LEAK!!) Brand New Battery,starter,blower motor, and edelbrock carb. Newer tires on the front. good brakes. Q: First car. Still trying to decide. Options.?
With a 32 on my ACT i can have ANY car under $30,000.
with a 30-31 on my ACT i can have ANY car under $15,000
with a 28-29 on my ACT i can have ANY car under $7500, BUT it has to be APPROVED by my dad.
My insurance company WILL NOT insure ANYONE under 22 with a high performance car (camaro, mustang, GTO etc.) UNLESS you pay high risk insurance which is a higher monthly payment.

here is my options and what I’d do with the left over money (Which I’ll have to talk my dad into letting me have).

Q: 1963 350 engine idle?
I have a 1963 chevy impala, I just put a 350 engine and converted the distributor points with an Accel points eliminator conversion kit part 2010. I have ahard time getting the engine to idle correctly. Some tell me that it might be my harmonic balancer that is slipping and making it hard to get the timing done correctly. But their is something that i noticed that does not seem right. When I have the car on an I disconnect the battery, the car idles alot higher and this may be the correct idle. My question is what causes the engine to idle like that? Could it be my Voltage regulator? I have a 1970 chevy truck with a 350 and this does not occur to my truck.

A: there are a lot of things that can give you problems with idle, make sure the carb is tight and has no leak and the manifold, the battery may have an internal short that is causing the alternator to work harder than it should at idle,try spraying some carb cleaner at the base of the carb see if the engine rpm goes up

Q: what car should my dad get mazda 3 or Kia Forte Koupe?
We test drove many cars. Chevy aveo, colbalt, impala, Honda Civic the fuel efficient car dont remember name, accord, ford focus, etc. The best we like r the Kia Foute Koup, Mazda 3 r ones we r leaning toward and the focus.
What ever we get it’ll have blue tooth sunroof good fuel use and standard transmission. the problem is the kia and mazda are soooo good cars. the kia has the pimpin interior and awesume shape. the mazda had more pep in the standard by a little, stereo is sweet (bose) that front grill smile with the is sumthin u cant go wrong w/. second higher level sport trim model. This is a hard decision, hope u guys can help.

Oh yeah we also test drove two Pontiac g6. 07 and 08, good cars but they werent standard..

A: Well… I actually have a 2007 Infiniti G35s sedan and is a good car, but – I’m looking into something more economical. I’ve never considered a Mazda… I’ve always thought of their cars as being bland – untill the new 6 and the 3 came out – they are nice looking, but – as always, out of the big Japanese makers, Mazda is ranked one of the lowest.

Toyota [Lexus], Honda [Acura], Nissan [Infiniti], Subaru…. then there’s Mazda – which would you want??

Anyways, I’m thinking of the Kia Forte Koupe SX: for the price, you can’t beat it… comes with everything… including leather, bluetooth, and a 6 speaker system that BLOWS even my Infiniti G35’s Bose”Studio on Wheels” -10speaker system. –I recently did a test drive 6speed manual:) Very impressive for this price!!!

Seriously – if audio is a consideration… and you think the Bose in the Mazda3 sounds good, go and listen to the Kia’s system [SX] closer >>bring a CD that you know well and compare the 2. YOu’d be surprised, and forget about the brand “Bose” — audio has nothing to do with a “well known brand”.
